About this place

Togendai is the terminal at the north end of Lake Ashi in Hakone, where the sightseeing pirate ships dock and the Hakone Ropeway begins its climb towards Owakudani. Port, ropeway station and bus stop share one building, so it is a natural place to leave the car and switch to the lake and the ropeway.

There are three lots close by: the Togendai Station lot (about 40 cars, ¥1,000 per visit, 9:00–17:00), a small free lot of around 18 spaces that fills early, and the larger Kojiri Rinkan lot next to the ropeway station (about 200 cars, ¥1,000, 8:00–17:00). Coming from the Tomei Expressway, the Gotemba IC is about 30 minutes away.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Togendai Port (Hakone)?
The mapcode is 50 569 147*51, pointing at a spot in 神奈川県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.237776, 138.996079. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
