About this place

Hakone-Yumoto Station is the gateway to Hakone, at the foot of the hills where the Odakyu line from Shinjuku ends and the Hakone Tozan mountain railway begins. The hot spring town of Yumoto spreads along the river right outside.

Route 1 is the only main road through here and has few alternatives, so it jams around Yumoto: the Miyanoshita-to-Yumoto stretch takes about 15 minutes normally and 30 minutes to an hour on weekend afternoons. Parking is in paid lots around the town. If you are meeting someone off the train, agree a lot in advance instead of pulling up at the station.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Hakone-Yumoto Station?
The mapcode is 57 222 533*46, pointing at a spot in 神奈川県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.233195, 139.103465. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
