About this place

Owakudani is the steaming volcanic valley on the north slope of Mount Kanmuri in Hakone, Kanagawa, the largest of Hakone’s fumarole fields and the place the black eggs boiled in its hot springs come from. It is a stop on the Hakone Ropeway as well as a road destination.

The prefectural road up to the Owakudani car park is only open from 9:00 to 17:00, and the car park itself is small and closes earlier, so on busy days the local advice is to park at Togendai, Ubako or Sounzan and ride the ropeway up. Volcanic gas is present: people with asthma, other respiratory or heart conditions, or a pacemaker are asked not to visit.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Owakudani?
The mapcode is 57 242 770*76, pointing at a spot in 神奈川県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.243557, 139.019295. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
