About this place

Hakone Shrine stands in cedar forest on the eastern shore of Lake Ashi at Motohakone, with a history of more than 1,260 years. Its red Peace Torii stands in the lake itself and is one of the most photographed spots in Hakone.

The shrine has its own free parking, and there are further small lots along the lakeside road towards Motohakone, including a free one of about 24 spaces and two paid lots of around 30 spaces each. Expect a queue for photos at the lakeside torii on weekends; the drive in along Route 1 from Yumoto is the slow part, not the last stretch.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Hakone Shrine?
The mapcode is 57 123 048*31, pointing at a spot in 神奈川県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.203787, 139.027017. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
