About this place

Sanmachi is the preserved merchant quarter of Takayama, in the Hida mountains of Gifu: three parallel streets of dark wooden townhouses, sake breweries and shops, about ten minutes on foot from Takayama Station. The mapcode lands near the eastern edge of the old streets, beside a car park.

The old streets are narrow and full of pedestrians, and nobody parks in them. Leave the car in one of the city-run lots on the edge of the district, such as Shinmei (about 55 spaces) or Tenma (about 104 spaces), and walk; the small lots fill first on weekends and during the spring and autumn Takayama Festivals.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Takayama Old Town (Sanmachi)?
The mapcode is 191 196 745*78, pointing at a spot in 岐阜県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.143176, 137.262447. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
