About this place

Kamikochi is a high mountain valley along the Azusa River in the Northern Alps, inside Matsumoto City, Nagano, with the Hotaka peaks above Kappa Bridge as its best-known view. It is one of the few famous places in Japan closed to private cars.

Prefectural Road 24 beyond the Kama Tunnel is closed to private cars all year, rental cars included. Drive to the Sawando car parks on the Matsumoto side (around 2,000 spaces) or the Akandana car park at Hirayu on the Gifu side, and take the shuttle bus or a taxi in. The mapcode here marks the Kamikochi bus terminal, where the shuttle buses and taxis arrive, so set your navigation to the car park and use this one for orientation. The road only opens from mid-April to 15 November.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Kamikochi?
The mapcode is 405 871 138*26, pointing at a spot in 長野県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.246100, 137.635300. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
