About this place

Ogisawa Station, in Omachi City, Nagano, is the eastern terminus of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: the end of the public road and the start of the electric trolley bus through the mountain to Kurobe Dam. For drivers it is where the car stops.

Private cars cannot go beyond Ogisawa; the Alpine Route is closed to them, so you park here (paid lots of about 350 spaces plus a free municipal lot) and continue by trolley bus. In peak weeks a temporary lot opens about 8 km before the station with a shuttle bus. The route itself only runs from mid-April to late November, and if you plan to come out on the Toyama side, book a car forwarding service in advance or plan to come back the same way.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Ogisawa Station (Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route)?
The mapcode is 691 491 625*72, pointing at a spot in 長野県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.558726, 137.720710. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
