About this place
Shirakawa-go is the World Heritage village of steep-roofed gassho-zukuri farmhouses in Ogimachi, Shirakawa Village, in the mountains of northern Gifu. It lies on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway between Takayama and Kanazawa, which makes it an easy stop on a road trip between the two.
Cars do not drive into the village. Everyone parks at the village-run Seseragi Park car park on the opposite bank of the Shogawa River (about 200 spaces, 8:00 to 17:00, 2,000 yen per car) and walks over the suspension bridge, about two minutes; Shirakawago IC is roughly five minutes away. On winter light-up days cars must move to the Terao temporary car park by 15:00, and in the snow season winter tyres are required.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Shirakawa-go?
- The mapcode is 549 019 455*62, pointing at a spot in 岐阜県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.257345, 136.906832. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
