About this place
Takayama Jinya is the former government office of the Hida region in central Takayama, Gifu, and the only magistrate’s office of the shogunate era in Japan whose main building still stands. It is a short walk from the Sanmachi old streets, so the two pair naturally.
The Jinya has no car park of its own and asks visitors to use the municipal lots. The closest, Plaza Jinya, is a minute’s walk but has only about 20 spaces; Nakabashi (about 26 spaces) and Shinmei (about 55) are three and five minutes away. It is roughly a ten-minute walk from Takayama Station if you would rather leave the car at your hotel.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Takayama Jinya?
- The mapcode is 191 196 338*02, pointing at a spot in 岐阜県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.139692, 137.257618. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
