About this place
Kenrokuen is the former daimyo garden of the Maeda family in central Kanazawa, Ishikawa, laid out next to Kanazawa Castle Park and counted among Japan’s three great landscape gardens. It is the fixed point of any Hokuriku drive, and most visitors combine it with the castle grounds across the road.
The mapcode points at the middle of the garden, which is all footpaths, so the navigation unit will drop you on whichever road edge it considers nearest. Drivers are better off aiming for the prefecture-run Kenroku car park in Kosho-machi (about 480 spaces, open 24 hours) and walking in. The Honda-no-Mori lot further south-east is the overflow.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.
How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Kenrokuen Garden?
- The mapcode is 41 529 115*27, pointing at a spot in 石川県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.562427, 136.662355. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
