About this place
Higashi Chaya District is a preserved teahouse quarter in Higashiyama, Kanazawa. About two thirds of its roughly 140 buildings are traditional, many of them teahouse-style townhouses built between the district's founding and the early Meiji era, and it is a national Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
The district is only about 180 m by 130 m, with narrow lanes meant for walking, so there is no point driving into it. The mapcode lands on its western edge; leave the car in a paid lot nearby and walk in.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Higashi Chaya District?
- The mapcode is 41 560 366*55, pointing at a spot in 石川県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.573092, 136.665355. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
