About this place
Shirahige Falls is in Shirogane Onsen, at the upper end of the Biei River valley below Mount Tokachi. The water does not pour over a lip; groundwater seeps out of the rock face and drops about 30 metres into the river in thin white strands, which is where the name, 'white beard', comes from.
The falls are seen from the Blue River Bridge on the road through Shirogane Onsen, about 30 minutes by car from Biei Station. Park at the free public lot in front of the Shirogane tourist centre (around 22 spaces) and walk onto the bridge; in winter the falls are lit up after dark.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Shirahige Falls (Biei)?
- The mapcode is 796 182 482*58, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 43.473580, 142.638332. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
