About this place

Hokusei no Oka Observatory Park is a small hilltop park on the northwest edge of Biei, Hokkaido, about seven minutes by car from Biei Station. A white pyramid-shaped observation tower looks out over the patchwork hills towards the Daisetsu and Tokachi ranges, which makes it the usual first stop on a Biei hill drive.

The mapcode lands on the park's own car park, which is free and holds around 30 cars, so you can drive straight in without looking for a roadside gap. Some roads and facilities around Biei's hills close from late November to late March, so check before relying on it in winter.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Hokusei no Oka Observatory Park?
The mapcode is 389 070 370*08, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 43.605879, 142.457330. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
