About this place

The Blue Pond is in Shirogane, Biei, formed when an erosion-control dam flooded a valley in the 1980s. Aluminium in the water scatters light into the turquoise that made the pond famous; the dead larch trunks standing in it are the drowned forest.

The pond is on the Shirogane road between Biei town and Shirogane Onsen, with a paid lot and a short walk to the water. The colour is weather-dependent — flat light and rain mute it — so this is a stop worth timing rather than fitting in wherever it lands.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 30 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot, the restaurant you booked — those need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix — that is fine, it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Blue Pond (Biei)?
The mapcode is 349 569 814*48, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 43.493490, 142.614098. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
