About this place

Sakurajima is the active volcano across the bay from Kagoshima City, one of the most frequently erupting in Japan. It was an island until the great eruption of 1914 poured enough lava to join it to the Osumi Peninsula, so today you can reach it either by ferry or by road around the bay.

The mapcode on this page points at the Sakurajima Visitor Center near the island’s ferry port. Most drivers come across on the city-run car ferry from Kagoshima, which takes about 15 minutes. The ferry used to run around the clock, but since 1 October 2025 there are no sailings between midnight and the 3 am hour. Once across, the island road is roughly 36 km round, and ash falls are routine, so keep the washer fluid topped up.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Sakurajima?
The mapcode is 42 011 437*53, pointing at a spot in 鹿児島県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 31.590792, 130.594134. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
