About this place

Kumamoto Castle, in the centre of Kumamoto City, was built by Kato Kiyomasa, with the main keep completed around 1607, and is famous for its steep curving stone walls. The 2016 earthquakes damaged it badly; the keep reopened in 2021, and full restoration of the site is scheduled to run until 2052.

The mapcode points into the Honmaru, the inner citadel, which you reach on foot. Drivers normally use the Ninomaru car park or the car park at Sakura-no-baba Josaien at the foot of the castle, then walk in. Parts of the grounds remain fenced off for restoration work, so walking routes may differ from older maps.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Kumamoto Castle?
The mapcode is 29 489 208*20, pointing at a spot in 熊本県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 32.805269, 130.705464. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
