About this place
Unzen Jigoku is the steaming field of fumaroles at the centre of Unzen Onsen, about 700 m up on the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki, with around 30 vents linked by walking paths. Unzen became one of Japan’s first national parks in 1934, and in the Edo period the Jigoku was a site where Christians were persecuted.
The mapcode lands on a car park beside Route 57 on the edge of the Jigoku, in the middle of the onsen town, so you can walk straight into the steam field from the car. From the Isahaya IC the drive up Route 57 takes about an hour, on a winding mountain road.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Unzen Jigoku?
- The mapcode is 173 556 558*46, pointing at a spot in 長崎県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 32.741908, 130.261259. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
