About this place
Aoshima Shrine stands in the subtropical forest at the centre of Aoshima, a tiny island about 1.5 km round just off the coast south of Miyazaki City. The island is ringed by the Devil’s Washboard, ridged rock shelves designated a national natural monument, and the shrine itself is known as a place to pray for a good match.
The shrine is reached on foot: park on the mainland side, about five minutes’ walk from JR Aoshima Station, and cross the bridge to the island. The shrine has no car park of its own, so use the paid lots along the approach street, plus a small free lot by the station. The mapcode above marks the shrine on the island, so park on the mainland first and walk the last stretch.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.
How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Aoshima Shrine?
- The mapcode is 843 192 098*38, pointing at a spot in 宮崎県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 31.804566, 131.474947. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
