About this place
Saraku is the public sand-bath house on the seafront in Ibusuki, at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula. You change into a cotton yukata and are buried up to the neck in sand warmed by hot springs seeping out beneath the beach. It is Ibusuki’s signature experience.

On weekdays there is a lunchtime break when no one is admitted, and the facility shuts for maintenance on set days in July and December and in bad weather, so check before making the drive down from Kagoshima.
