About this place

Mt Aso is the active volcano at the centre of one of the world’s largest calderas, about 25 km north to south, in eastern Kumamoto. Its central cones include Takadake, the highest at 1,592 m, and Nakadake, whose smoking crater is the one visitors come to look into.

The summit cones and the crater rim cannot be reached by car; set the navigation for the Aso-sanjo area or the crater car park and go on from there. Whether you can approach the crater at all depends on the volcanic alert level and gas readings, and the area has been closed for long stretches, so check the Aso volcano information site on the day before you drive up. The crater area is also closed at night.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Mt. Aso?
The mapcode is 256 459 153*51, pointing at a spot in 熊本県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 32.879794, 131.073539. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
