About this place
Kurokawa Onsen is a small hot spring village in Minamioguni, on the northern side of Aso in Kumamoto, with its inns strung along a narrow river valley. The village removed its roadside signboards to keep a uniform rustic look, and its wooden bath-hopping pass, introduced in 1986, lets visitors try the outdoor baths of several inns.
The mapcode points at the centre of the village. Most drivers arrive along the Yamanami Highway, which links Kurokawa with Aso, Kuju and Yufuin and makes it a natural stop on a cross-Kyushu drive. The village lanes are narrow and meant for walking, so park once and walk between the baths rather than driving from inn to inn.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Kurokawa Onsen?
- The mapcode is 440 542 848*43, pointing at a spot in 熊本県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 33.078058, 131.141715. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
