About this place

Lake Mashu Observatory No.1 sits on the crater rim above Lake Mashu in Teshikaga, eastern Hokkaido, and is the main viewpoint for the lake's famously clear, deep-blue water. The rest house was rebuilt as Mashu Kamui Terrace in 2022, with a rooftop deck that looks straight down into the caldera.

The mapcode points at the observatory itself, on the lakeside road climbing from Teshikaga; it is about 20 minutes by car from Kawayu Onsen Station. The car park holds around 125 cars and is charged from May to October, with the ticket also valid at the Mount Io car park on the same day; from November to April parking is free.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Lake Mashu Observatory No.1?
The mapcode is 613 781 491*81, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 43.557064, 144.507405. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
