About this place
Hoshino Resorts Tomamu is a large mountain resort in Shimukappu, central Hokkaido. Outside the ski season its draw is the Unkai Terrace, a deck at about 1,088 metres reached by a gondola ride of around 13 minutes, where on the right mornings the valley below fills with a sea of cloud.
The terrace operates only from late spring to mid-autumn and only in the early morning, with the last gondola up at 8:00 (7:00 from 13 to 31 May). This is a drive to make the night before, not on the day. A cloud sea is never guaranteed, and the resort has introduced advance booking of entry times to manage crowds.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.
How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Hoshino Resorts Tomamu (Unkai Gondola)?
- The mapcode is 608 510 427*12, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 43.064870, 142.623270. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
