About this place

Kyoto Station is the city’s main rail hub, on the Tokaido Shinkansen and at the southern edge of central Kyoto. For drivers it is mostly a meeting and drop-off point, where you collect people off the bullet train before heading out.

The station is long and has two sides: the Karasuma side to the north and the Hachijo side to the south, where the Shinkansen platforms are. The Hachijo-guchi plaza was rebuilt in 2016 with dedicated pick-up and drop-off bays, which is usually the easier side to stop. The mapcode gets you to the station but not to a particular exit, so agree which side you are meeting on before you set off.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Kyoto Station?
The mapcode is 7 526 856*36, pointing at a spot in 京都府. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.986191, 135.760063. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
