About this place

Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of the Inari faith, at the foot of Mount Inari in Fushimi Ward, southern Kyoto. The tunnels of vermilion torii that climb the mountain behind it are among the best-known images of Japan.

The shrine has a worshippers’ car park, but it and the surrounding roads get very congested and the shrine itself asks visitors to come by public transport; the lot is closed from 30 December to 6 January, and parking for anything other than visiting the shrine is not allowed. By car it is about 20 minutes from the Kyoto-minami IC on the Meishin Expressway, or about 10 minutes from the Kamitoba exit of the Hanshin Expressway.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Fushimi Inari Taisha?
The mapcode is 7 468 604*60, pointing at a spot in 京都府. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.967172, 135.773389. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
