About this place
Kinkakuji, formally Rokuon-ji, is the Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose gold-leafed pavilion stands over a pond. It is one of the most visited sights in the city.
The mapcode points inside the grounds, by the temple buildings beside the pavilion. The temple’s car parks (250 spaces across three lots, 8:40–17:10) are right in front of the entrance gate; cars pay ¥400 for the first hour and ¥200 per 30 minutes after that. Kyoto’s own advice is to come by bus, and in peak seasons the surrounding roads are slow.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.
How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Kinkakuji?
- The mapcode is 7 732 326*37, pointing at a spot in 京都府. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.039524, 135.729533. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
