About this place

Ginkakuji, formally Jisho-ji, is the Zen temple at the foot of the eastern hills in Kyoto’s Sakyo Ward, and the northern end of the Philosopher’s Path. Its Silver Pavilion was never actually covered in silver; the raked sand garden in front of it is as much the attraction.

The mapcode points at the foot of the approach by Imadegawa-dori, a few hundred metres west of the gate, not at the temple itself. The temple has no car park of its own; the city-run Ginkakuji sightseeing car park (around 40 cars, 8:40–17:10) gives priority to buses and taxis and may turn private cars away in busy periods, so be ready to use coin parking nearby. The approach up to the gate is narrow and crowded, so park first and walk.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Ginkakuji?
The mapcode is 7 680 856*45, pointing at a spot in 京都府. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.027863, 135.793437. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
