About this place
Kiyomizu-dera is the temple on the slopes of Higashiyama in eastern Kyoto, known for the wooden stage of its main hall built out over the hillside. It is reached up the steep, shop-lined lanes of Kiyomizu-michi and Gojo-zaka.
There is no parking in the temple grounds. Drivers use the city-run car park or the private lots at the foot of the approach, then walk up; the lanes to the gate are pedestrian-heavy and not somewhere to drive. The temple itself recommends public transport or a taxi in busy seasons, and Kyoto runs a park-and-ride scheme for visitors who drive in.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Kiyomizu-dera?
- The mapcode is 7 559 824*24, pointing at a spot in 京都府. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.994303, 135.784439. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
