About this place

The Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi is a pedestrian suspension bridge in Kokonoe, Oita, 390 m long and 173 m above the river below. It opened in 2006 and looks over the Naruko River gorge and the Shindo waterfalls, which are at their best in the autumn colours.

The mapcode points at the bridge itself. It has an entrance at each end, Nakamura and Kitakata, both reached from Prefectural Road 40, with car parks totalling around 360 spaces, and you cross on foot for a fee. The bridge sits on high, exposed ground in the Kuju area, so wind and winter road conditions are worth checking before the drive up.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi?
The mapcode is 269 012 434*75, pointing at a spot in 大分県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 33.173889, 131.226667. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
