About this place
Yufuin Onsen is the hot spring town in a basin at the foot of Mt Yufu in Yufu City, Oita, with the second-largest spring output in Japan after Beppu. It is known for small inns, the Yunotsubo shopping street and Lake Kinrin, rather than big resort hotels.
The mapcode points at the tourist information centre by JR Yufuin Station, where the town centre begins. From the Yufuin IC on the Oita Expressway it is about 3 km into town, but congestion and parking are a well-known problem at busy times, so it is usually easier to park near the station or at your inn and walk to the Yunotsubo street and the lake.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Yufuin Onsen?
- The mapcode is 269 357 118*61, pointing at a spot in 大分県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 33.262544, 131.355521. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
