About this place
The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is the path through tall bamboo on the western edge of Kyoto, running between the Tenryuji and Nonomiya Shrine area and the Okochi Sanso villa. It is at its busiest in early April and late November.
The path is a walkway, with nowhere to stop beside it. The mapcode points at its upper end by Torokko Arashiyama station on the Sagano scenic railway; park in one of the paid lots around central Arashiyama or the Togetsukyo Bridge and walk in. Arashiyama’s narrow streets jam badly at the height of the cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons, when the city runs traffic measures aimed at keeping cars out. Arriving early or coming by train (Saga-Arashiyama on the JR Sagano line) is far easier.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Arashiyama Bamboo Grove?
- The mapcode is 7 635 593*11, pointing at a spot in 京都府. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.016954, 135.670451. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
