About this place

Itsukushima Shrine stands over the tidal flats of Miyajima, an island in Hatsukaichi City off the Hiroshima coast, and its great torii in the sea is one of Japan’s most famous views. The shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Do not plan to drive on the island. The tourist association says Miyajima is very poorly suited to sightseeing by car: there is no parking at the sights, and vehicles are barred from the shopping street and shrine area from 10:00 to 17:30. Park on the mainland at Miyajimaguchi and take the ten-minute passenger ferry (JR or Matsudai). The mapcode is for orientation on the island, not a place to drive to.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Itsukushima Shrine?
The mapcode is 103 473 167*34, pointing at a spot in 広島県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.296542, 132.319008. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
