About this place
Izumo Taisha is one of Japan’s oldest and most important Shinto shrines, in the Taisha district of Izumo City on the western edge of Shimane. It sits well away from the rail trunk lines, so most visitors from outside the prefecture arrive by car via the Izumo interchange.
The mapcode points at the pine-lined approach inside the grounds, a short walk south of the main hall, not at a car park. The shrine runs its own parking (the main lot holds 385 cars, a second lot 360), so set the mapcode to get your bearings and follow the parking signs for the last few hundred metres. From the Izumo IC the usual route is Route 431.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Izumo Taisha?
- The mapcode is 258 832 555*71, pointing at a spot in 島根県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.399803, 132.685151. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
