About this place
Dogo Onsen Honkan is the wooden public bathhouse at the centre of Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama, Ehime. In 1994 it became the first public bathhouse designated a national Important Cultural Property, and its six-year preservation works were completed in December 2024.
The Honkan has no car park of its own, and the streets around it are pedestrian-heavy. The main option is the city’s Dogo Onsen car park just south of the building, where the first hour is free if you bathe at one of the three Dogo public baths; a second lot about 400 m north is the fallback when it fills.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Dogo Onsen Honkan?
- The mapcode is 53 349 770*84, pointing at a spot in 愛媛県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 33.852062, 132.786404. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
