About this place

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park covers the former Nakajima district in central Hiroshima, between the Motoyasu and Honkawa rivers, near the hypocentre of the 1945 atomic bombing. The Peace Memorial Museum, the Cenotaph and the Atomic Bomb Dome across the river line up on a single axis designed by Kenzo Tange.

The mapcode points at the centre of the park, near the Pond of Peace and the Cenotaph, a walking area with no driving access. Park in one of the paid car parks in central Hiroshima and walk in; around 6 August, when the Peace Memorial Ceremony is held, expect the area to be far busier than usual.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park?
The mapcode is 22 189 707*30, pointing at a spot in 広島県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.393171, 132.452301. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
