About this place
Atami Sun Beach is a 400-metre man-made beach on the seafront of Atami, Shizuoka, built in the 1980s with sand brought in from Chiba. It faces southeast over Sagami Bay and is lit in blue-green from sunset until 22:00 all year round.
Swimming is only supervised in the summer season, from mid-July to the end of August. The beach sits on the coastal road through central Atami, with municipal paid lots along the waterfront. On the nights of the Atami fireworks the seafront is the viewing area, so expect it to be much busier than usual.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Atami Sun Beach?
- The mapcode is 116 654 348*28, pointing at a spot in 静岡県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.098240, 139.076861. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
