About this place

The Iya Kazurabashi is a vine bridge over the Iya River in Nishi-Iya, deep in the mountains of Miyoshi, Tokushima. It is about 45 m long and 14 m above the water, woven from mountain vines and designated an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property.

The mapcode points at the bridge area beside the main valley road, where the shops and car parks sit above the river and you walk down to the crossing. The vines wear out quickly, so the bridge is rebuilt every three years and closed for about a month while that happens. Check before a long drive into the valley. The roads in are narrow mountain routes, so allow more time than the distance suggests.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Iya Kazurabashi Vine Bridge?
The mapcode is 357 130 457*87, pointing at a spot in 徳島県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 33.874257, 133.832706. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
