About this place

Todaiji is the great temple of Nara, at the northern edge of Nara Park, whose wooden Great Buddha Hall houses a bronze Buddha about 15 metres tall. It is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara World Heritage site.

The mapcode points at the Daibutsuden bus stop on Noborioji Avenue, where the walking approach to the temple begins, rather than at the hall itself. The temple has no parking of its own: use a paid lot nearby, such as the one by the Nishi-daimon site, or the free tourist car parks Nara Prefecture opens on weekends and holidays in spring and autumn, which connect to the area by the ¥100 Gurutto Bus.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Todaiji?
The mapcode is 11 356 546*40, pointing at a spot in 奈良県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.683491, 135.840704. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
