About this place

Osaka Castle’s keep rises from the middle of Osaka Castle Park in Chuo Ward, ringed by moats and huge stone walls. The current keep is a 1931 reconstruction that now houses a museum.

The mapcode points at the keep, which sits on the inner citadel and cannot be driven to. Park at the Osaka Castle Park Station lot (171 cars) or the Morinomiya lot (143 cars) and walk in; both charge ¥400 an hour on weekdays and ¥500 at weekends during the day. From the Hanshin Expressway Route 13, use the Hoenzaka exit coming from the Kobe side or Morinomiya coming from the east.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Osaka Castle?
The mapcode is 1 378 073*21, pointing at a spot in 大阪府. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.687373, 135.525856. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
