About this place

Nara Park is the large open park on the eastern side of central Nara, with Todaiji, Kofukuji and Kasuga Taisha all within or beside it. Around 1,200 wild sika deer roam it freely; they are a protected natural monument, regarded as messengers of Kasuga Taisha.

The park has no gates and is open all the time, so there is no single entrance to drive to. Nara Prefecture runs paid car parks around it, the largest near Todaiji (about 275 cars) and another at Takahata (166 cars), with fees that rise in peak season. On spring and autumn holidays the surrounding roads jam and the lots fill, and the prefecture recommends coming by public transport.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Nara Park?
The mapcode is 11 355 823*63, pointing at a spot in 奈良県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.685842, 135.834210. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
