About this place

Sefa Utaki is the most sacred site of the old Ryukyu Kingdom, a forest shrine of natural rock halls on the Chinen coast of Nanjo City, in southern Okinawa. It is part of the UNESCO Gusuku World Heritage listing, and Kudaka Island, revered as the ‘island of the gods’, lies just offshore.

The mapcode points at the site itself, which you reach on foot. Drivers park at the Nanjo City regional products hall and the Cape Chinen Park lots beside it, free and around 150 cars in total, then walk up to the entrance, buying a ticket on the way. The site closes to visitors twice a year for rest days set by the lunar calendar, so check the dates before you go.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Sefa Utaki?
The mapcode is 33 024 285*18, pointing at a spot in 沖縄県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 26.173358, 127.827408. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
