About this place
The Sapporo Clock Tower is the former drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College, in Kita 1-jo Nishi 2-chome in central Sapporo. Its Howard pendulum clock was installed in 1881 and is the oldest tower clock in Japan, still striking the hours.
The building has no car park of its own, so the mapcode is useful mainly for finding a paid lot nearby rather than for pulling up at the door. It is about ten minutes on foot from the south exit of Sapporo Station and five from Odori subway station, which makes leaving the car at your hotel the easier option.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.
How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Sapporo Clock Tower?
- The mapcode is 9 522 206*01, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 43.062554, 141.353645. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
