About this place
Odori Park runs about 1.5 km east to west through central Sapporo, from Nishi 1-chome to Nishi 12-chome. It began in 1871 as a firebreak and is still legally a road; today it is the venue for the Snow Festival, the Lilac Festival and Autumn Fest.
The park has no parking, and the mapcode lands around its middle blocks, so treat it as a reference point for the paid car parks on the surrounding streets. Walking its full length takes about half an hour, and during the big festivals the area is crowded enough that leaving the car elsewhere is easier.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.
How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Odori Park?
- The mapcode is 9 492 784*33, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 43.059902, 141.347510. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
