About this place
The Hill of the Buddha is in Makomanai Takino Cemetery, in Takino, Minami Ward, on the southern outskirts of Sapporo. Tadao Ando covered a 13.5-metre stone Buddha with a lavender-planted hill so that only the head shows above it, reached through a 40-metre tunnel at the end of a 135-metre approach.
The Buddha is inside a large working cemetery, so once through the gate follow the signs to the central car park, which the cemetery directs drivers to. Viewing hours are shorter from November to March than in summer, there is an admission fee, and the lavender on the hill is a summer feature only.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Hill of the Buddha?
- The mapcode is 9 045 099*08, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 42.928413, 141.373867. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
