About this place
Kaiyukan is the large aquarium at Tempozan on the Osaka Bay waterfront in Minato Ward. Visitors ride up to the top floor and spiral down around a central Pacific Ocean tank that holds whale sharks and manta rays; it sits within the Tempozan Harbor Village shopping and leisure area.
Come off the Hanshin Expressway at the Tempozan exit. The main car park is Tempozan Parking, directly beneath the aquarium and the marketplace, with about 1,000 spaces (8:00–23:00), a 2.0 m height and 5.0 m length limit, and fees of ¥200 per 30 minutes on weekdays up to ¥2,000 a day, or ¥250 up to ¥2,500 at weekends and on holidays.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan?
- The mapcode is 1 246 144*84, pointing at a spot in 大阪府. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.654546, 135.428921. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
