About this place

Nikko Toshogu is the shrine in Nikko, Tochigi, that enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, as a deity. Together with Futarasan Shrine and Rinnoji temple it forms the 'Shrines and Temples of Nikko' World Heritage Site, listed in 1999.

Nikko IC on the Nikko-Utsunomiya Road is about 2 km from the shrine. The shrine's own large car park holds about 200 cars and charges a flat daily fee. Ticket sales close 30 minutes before the gates, which shut at 17:00 from April to October and at 16:00 in winter.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Nikko Toshogu?
The mapcode is 367 312 488*64, pointing at a spot in 栃木県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.757638, 139.599110. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
