About this place

Koga Kubo Park, officially Koga Sogo Park, is a 25-hectare municipal park in Koga, at the western tip of Ibaraki, built around the site of the residence of the Koga kubo, the Ashikaga lords who ruled the Kanto from here in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It is best known for its grove of around 1,500 flowering peach trees.

The park has a large free car park, but during the Koga Peach Festival in mid to late March it becomes paid and fills up on weekends. The car park and park buildings keep 9:00 to 17:00 hours, so arrive within that window rather than at dawn for the blossom. This is flat farmland on the Ibaraki–Saitama–Gunma border, and the mapcode saves you from matching similar-looking local roads.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Koga Kubo Park?
The mapcode is 45 609 705*15, pointing at a spot in 茨城県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.176363, 139.701123. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
