About this place
The Yubatake, or 'hot water field', is the main spring at the centre of Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma. Scalding sulphurous water runs through long wooden channels to cool and release its gases before it is piped to the inns, and the town's main streets and inns ring the pool.
The streets around the Yubatake are narrow and busy with people on foot, so park and walk. The Yubatake tourist car park (about 180 spaces) is paid by time, and the Onsen Gate car park (about 101 spaces, open 24 hours) is free. Kusatsu is high enough that winter tyres or chains are needed in winter, and the Shiga-Kusatsu road over the mountains closes for the season.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Kusatsu Onsen Yubatake?
- The mapcode is 341 447 122*55, pointing at a spot in 群馬県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.620887, 138.597395. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
