About this place

Karuizawa Station is the Hokuriku Shinkansen stop for the highland resort of Karuizawa, Nagano, about an hour from Tokyo Station on the fastest trains. Many visitors arrive by train and pick up a rental car here, and the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza outlet mall sits right on the south side of the tracks.

The station has a north exit facing the town and Kyu-Karuizawa, and a south exit facing the outlet mall; they are on different roads, so pick the side your rental office is on before you start. In Golden Week, summer and autumn holidays the queue for the outlet car parks spills onto the roads around the south exit, so allow extra time to get in or out.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Karuizawa Station?
The mapcode is 292 616 714*14, pointing at a spot in 長野県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.343043, 138.637099. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
