About this place

Nakagusuku Castle Ruins stand on a ridge in Nakagusuku Village, in central Okinawa, high above the east coast. The six enclosures of curved limestone walls are among the best preserved in Okinawa, and the site has been part of the UNESCO Gusuku World Heritage listing since 2000.

The castle is about 15 minutes from Kitanakagusuku IC on the Okinawa Expressway, and its free car park takes around 50 cars. The mapcode points inside the walls, in the western enclosure, so follow the signs for the car park and ticket gate for the last few hundred metres. Admission is charged; the site is open until 17:00, or 18:00 from May to September.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Nakagusuku Castle Ruins?
The mapcode is 33 411 551*14, pointing at a spot in 沖縄県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 26.284194, 127.801361. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
